Felix Avoids Getting “Felixed” Again

by Jackson Safon

Last Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the Pirates was just another example of how Felix Hernandez is not getting the run support he needs or deserved. He had to hold the Pirates to one run over eight innings to avoid, as Mitch Levy put it, “getting Felixed”. Throughout his entire career, Felix has not gotten the same run support as not only other pitchers in the league, but other pitchers on the team. Perhaps this is just perception, but the statistics show that he really is getting very little support. In six of his eight starts this season, the Mariners have scored three runs or less, and in three of those six they have scored two or less. It is not only that however. In the three games Felix has started that the Mariners have not won, the team scored three runs twice, and one in the other game. Additionally, all three of these games were one run losses. This wouldn't be so hard to take if the Mariners were actually better. They are under five hundred, as seems to be the norm recently, and over a fourth of their losses are one or two runs games. Furthermore, the knock on Felix’s Cy Young bid every season is that he doesn't have a high enough win total, even though his other numbers are near or at the top of the league. If the M’s offense could simply produce at a league average level on a consistent basis for Felix, he would earn many more wins.

Felix wishes his offense could spare him a few runs to work with.
Howard Simmons/NYT

One interesting note about Felix and his success is that his WAR (wins above replacement) is only 2.5. Although I am not an expert on this statistic, it would seem that leading the American League in ERA, is second in WHIP, tied for third in strikeouts, and second in strikeout to walk ratio would be worth more 2.5 wins above the average starter. The real issue however is that Felix has to avoid “getting Felixed” seemingly every start. Although he is on a really hot four-start stretch, he won’t be able to hold offenses to one run or less every game. When he cools off a little bit the team will really be in trouble. If the pattern of run support, or lack thereof continues, we won’t even be able to win games when Felix does start. This article is as much a praise of Felix as it is a challenge to our offense. It is really time for the offense to step up. Almost a fourth of the way through the season, and after starting the season around the middle of the pack, the Mariners have regressed back to the norm for them, and are second to last in the league in average and runs scored. The Mariners have managed to hang around and are now just three games below five hundred even with this crappy offense, so if they can finally step up a little bit I don’t see why this team can’t break through. So this is my official challenge to the offense. Step up. Make progress. Let’s finally get a winning season again.

The King Hits 100

by Jackson Safon

On Monday Felix Hernandez became the third pitcher in Mariners history (Jamie Moyer and Randy Johnson) to get 100 wins. First I would like to say congratulations to him because this is a really great accomplishment, especially pitching for a team that has had consistently terrible offensive production throughout his career. He achieved this accomplishment against the Astros in a game where the Mariners provided him with seven runs, an unbelievably high amount considering how inept the Mariners offense has been recently. It always seems like Felix gets the least run support out of all of the Mariner’s starters. Whenever Felix hits any sort of milestone in wins, it always gets me thinking how many he could have if the Mariners offense wasn’t so terrible. His career high in wins is 19, but besides that season, he has never had more than 14. Considering Felix has almost always been a top five pitcher in the American League, it is crazy how few wins he has. He is always towards the top of the list in strikeouts, ERA, WHIP, K/9 innings, and basically every statistical category other than wins, which makes you realize how bad his run support must be. I have no doubt that if he was on a team with a halfway decent offense or better, he would have many more wins and probably a few more Cy Young awards as well.

Felix Hernandez has had an exceptional season thus far, but as is the norm, he has not received substantial run support from the offense.
Ben Margot / The Associated Press

To prove how good Felix’s stats are, we are going to play a little game called player A vs. player B. To do this we simply use stats to decide which player we would prefer as opposed to the perception of the public.

Player A: 15-6, 3.38 ERA, 197 K’s, 1.14 WHIP

Player B: 13-9, 3.06 ERA, 223 K’s, 1.14 WHIP

Player C: 17-8, 2.64 ERA, 239 K’s, 1.06 WHIP

I think it is obvious that the best of the three pitchers is player C, who happens to be Justin Verlander. Second best would be player B who is King Felix, and the third of the three is player A, who is C.C. Sabathia. Few would say argue against Verlander being the best pitcher in baseball, but as Felix’s numbers show, he isn’t all that far behind. The biggest disparity for Felix against all other pitchers and therefore his biggest obstacle in winning the Cy Young, is wins. However, this shouldn’t be held against him, because it isn’t really his fault. The Mariners have had a consistently terrible offense throughout the entirety of Felix’s time in Seattle, while teams like the Yankees and Tigers have been towards the top of the league in terms of run support. I have no doubt that if Felix was pitching for the Tigers, Yankees, or any other team with an average or above average offense, his win total would skyrocket.

At this point, Felix is the second highest paid pitcher in baseball and I would argue that he is the second best pitcher in baseball. It is disappointing that it has taken him this long to hit 100 wins because our offense has been so terrible, but it is still a great accomplishment and the biggest congratulations go out to him from us. In short, Seattle loves Felix, and they go to great lengths to show it, but I still think his greatness is under appreciated and hitting a milestone like this is a great time to show our gratitude. Thank you Felix for all you do, and thank you for being a Mariner for life.

Analysis of the Seahawks' 2013 Schedule

by Jackson Safon

The Seahawks have moved from an unrecognized team, only loved by its hometown fans, to a trendy super bowl pick. But now the schedules have been released and I think it’s time for an analysis to see how good of a chance the Seahawks have to win the division. However, because of their NFC West Championship last year, the division still belongs to the 49ers. One cool note about the schedule is the Hawks have the most prime time games out of anyone in the whole league with four. And that number could even increase because of the flex scheduling in the later weeks of the season. Here is an analysis of all of the Seahawks' 16 match-ups this year in the regular season:

Week 1:
At the Panthers. With the Panthers and Cam Newton really taking a step back last year, and the Hawks taking a massive leap forward, I don’t see anything that would prompt me to pick against the Seahawks in this won. Chalk up the win. 1-0.

Week 2:
Home against the 49ers. Sunday Night Football. The home opener is no cupcake as we get the reigning division champs. I think both teams will be improved last from last year and the 49ers offense has a chance to be scary good with the development of Kaepernick and the addition of Anquan Boldin. Both teams will be fired up for this one because of the rivalry as well as the national television spot and I expect it to be a really good game. As good as the 49ers are, and trust me I think they have a chance to be virtually unstoppable this season, I think the 'Hawks win this one. The home field advantage can’t be understated, and I think the Seahawks match up well against the Niners. Win. 2-0.

It will be a match-up of dual threat QB's early in the season when the 49ers come to town to face the Seahawks.
AP Photo

Week 3:
Home against the Jaguars. Gus Bradley returns. Former 'Hawks defensive coordinator and now Jaguars head coach will get his homecoming sooner rather than later. Too bad it has to be spoiled. Plain and simple the Jaguars aren't very good (although I expect them to be improved from last year), and we are very good. Easy win. 3-0.

Week 4:
At the Texans. This is a tough one. The Texans are not only very good but they are nearly unstoppable in Reliant Stadium. They play pretty good defense, and have J.J. Watt dominating the line of scrimmage. Although Russell Wilson has proved everyone wrong with the whole height thing, I am interested to see if he gets affected at all by Watt’s unbelievable ability to swat passes at the line of scrimmage. Another tough one for the 'Hawks is the fact that the Texans are a much better running team than they are a passing team, and rush defense is the weaker half of the 'Hawks defense. Expect this one to be very close, but I think the Texans will pull it out at home. 3-1.

Week 5:
At the Colts. Although the Colts were a playoff team last year, their scoring margin was that of a .500 team, and that showed when they got handled by the Ravens in the playoffs. One more year under Andrew Luck’s belt and I expect the Colts to be a very solid team, but not enough to contend with the 'Hawks. The Colts offensive line was the worst in the league last season and the new and improved Seahawks pass rush will feast on it all game. Expect a lot of sacks and possibly a few interceptions as well. 'Hawks win. 4-1.

Week 6:
Home against the Titans. Bad team. In the CLink. 'Hawks win. 5-1.

Week 7:
At the Cardinals. Thursday Night Football. Although I do expect the Cardinals to be much improved from last year, I just don’t see how they can hang with the 'Hawks. They play good defense and if Bruce Arians gets a quarterback the Cards could surprise some people, but I still don’t think they are good enough for the Hawks. Not nearly. 6-1.

Week 8:
At the Rams. Monday Night Football. After a short week with a game on Thursday they get even more rest not playing until two Mondays later. This long week will be really helpful because the Rams have a chance to be really good. They play very tough at home and I think they have a chance to make some noise in the division, but an extra long week for the Hawks bodes poorly for St. Louis. Expect a win. 7-1.

The Rams and head coach Jeff Fisher will boast a much improved team this year.

Week 9:
Home against the Buccaneers. The Bucs were last in the league against the pass last year and I expect Russell Wilson to have a feast in this game. However, their offense was decent with Doug Martin running the ball and Freeman chucking it down field  This one has a chance to be a shootout, but no matter the type of game, the Seahawks are still much more talented. 'Hawks win. 8-1.

Week 10:
At the Falcons. The rematch. The Seahawks lost a heart-breaker to the Falcons in the playoffs last season at the Georgia Dome which would have sent the 'Hawks to the conference championship game. Tough loss. Chance to avenge it here. I am a serious believer in Matt Ryan at home in the regular season, but I think this is one game he just can’t win. I can’t even imagine how fired up the 'Hawks will be and I think they take this one on the road in a nail biter. 9-1.

Week 11:
Home against the Vikings. Adrian Peterson is superhuman so the Vikings always have a chance. But I always like the Seahawks at home. Without a quarterback and a linebacking crew, I don’t see the Vikings keeping this one close. 10-1.

Week 12:
BYE. This gives me a chance to put in some notes. It scares me a little bit to be typing 10-1 through our first 11 games. That’s a really good start. Perhaps too good to be true. However, I think it’s going to happen. Also, this next set of games after the bye week is so unbelievably critical it’s hard to understate. Three VERY good teams in a row. Read on.

Week 13:
Home against the Saints. Monday Night Football. Dun dun dun dun... Dun dun.. dun dun.. Dun dun dun dun dun... dun dun.. dun dun... That doesn't really have the same affect without the actual MNF music (actual music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrnY11pXSFE ). But I was trying to get you pumped up, because this is a huge game. National television against one of the premier offensives and premier teams in the NFC. The Saints under performed last year, but I expect them to bulk up on defense at the draft, and with Sean Payton back that offense can do anything. Defensively, this will be the biggest challenge for the Seahawks all season. The extra week of preparation will help, but I say it’s a loss. Tough game. 10-2.

Drew Brees and the pass-heavy Saints could prove to be too much for the Seahawks.

Week 14:
At the 49ers. Wow. Right after we get the Saints we have to go to San Francisco on a short week. That’s a tough one. As good as the Seahawks are this year, I think the 49ers have an outside shot to be better. Plus, playing in Candlestick isn't easy. Niners win. Back to back losses is tough. 10-3.

Week 15:
At the Giants. I said the next stretch of games would be key didn't I? Another tough game. The Giants will return strong after a down year last year. I think they could be a tough match-up for us, but I have a feeling we pull this one out. Even in the Meadowlands. 11-3.

If the Hawks could go through weeks 13-15 with at least two wins I think that would be a colossal success.

Week 16:
Home against the Cardinals. Like I said before, Arizona will be much better than last year and surprise some people; but they can’t beat the Seahawks in Seattle. This does have some potential to be a trap game however because the 'Hawks would have just come off three monster games. I hate to say it, but it wouldn't be completely out of the realm to slip a tad bit and lose this game. But I don’t see it happening. Not at home. 'Hawks win. 12-3.

Week 17:
Home against the Rams. The Rams will be good. I believe it. Good defense and an improving quarterback. They tied the 49ers in San Francisco last year and should have won it except for a couple penalties, so it wouldn't be impossible for them to win in Seattle as well. This game though is one that could decide who wins the division as I expect the Seahawks and 49ers to be neck and neck for the regular season title. Because of that, I know the 'Hawks will come out firing and win this game. 13-3.

Okay 13-3. That would be an absolutely fantastic season. Furthermore, optimistically, the Hawks could finish 15-1 with wins at Houston which I think will be very close, and a home win against the Saints. I do not think the Hawks can win all three games in weeks 13-15 however so I don’t really think a perfect season is coming. Although it wouldn't be impossible…anyways. Pessimistically, the Hawks could finish a much worse 10-6, with potential losses being @ Colts, @ Falcons, and @ Giants. Any of these three finishes or something in between could be plausible, but I think this Seahawks team has a chance to be very good. Historically good. Perhaps even Super Bowl good. No need to count your chickens yet, but if I were you, I wouldn't miss too many games this year.

Seattle Mariner's 2013 Season: Bold Predictions

by Jackson Safon

In a season where expectations are as high as they have been in years for the Mariners, it is important to temper these hopes. Chances are this Mariners team will not win the AL West and chances are there will not be a player on this roster to lead the MLB in home runs. But this team does have potential, and these predictions will be bold, but they will not be impossible. Enjoy.

1. Justin Smoak will lead the team in RBI
Before you send an angry email complaining about how this will never happen and how Smoak has underperformed in every sense of the word, let me explain. Smoak has underperformed, but I think this really could be his breakout year. In spring training Smoak was tied for the team lead in RBI and was only four back of Morse for the team lead in homeruns. When I suggest Smoak as the team leader in RBI most people would counter with Morales or Morse, and don’t get me wrong, I am unbelievably excited for those guys as well, but I really think this is Smoak’s year. All of the attention of opposing pitchers will be centered on Morales and Morse and I think this will allow Smoak some great opportunities to drive in a lot of runs.

2. Brandon Maurer will be the MVP of the pitching staff
Calm down. Just calm down. I am not saying he will pitch better than Felix this season. Let me repeat, I am NOT saying he will pitch better than Felix. I am simply saying he will be a very valuable back end of the rotation guy. Think Pippen to Felix’s Michael Jordan. This Mariners team is one that has far less pitching depth which means that guys like Brandon Maurer and Blake Beaven will be increasingly important. Maurer is a monster at 6’5’’, 215 pounds and can really bring the heat. During the spring he had 25 strikeouts in 24 innings and had a 1.50 ERA, which is a great and encouraging number. I think Maurer will have a fantastic season and will be as good as any fourth starter in the league. This success at the back end of the rotation will reflect directly in the win column. Hence, value in MVP.

Brandon Maurer is another gem the Mariners have raised in their rich farm system.
Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

3. The Mariners will not be last in the division
This is sort of a trick statement and not really that bold either because the Astros are in the AL West now, but I had to put it in here because they have been in the cellar four of the last five seasons. I say this more because I think this team will be better, than because the Astros have joined the division. I really think this team has the power to contend in the division and if they are lucky, a playoff spot.

4. Franklin Gutierrez will miss nine or less games this year
Over the past two seasons Gutierrez has missed a total of 192 games. That’s a lot. But in his first two years in Seattle he only missed 19 games combined. I think Guti is rearing for a bounce-back year to prove to the Seattle fans that he can live up to his potential. He is obviously a gold glove caliber center fielder defensively, but I think with a full season he could potentially be a 20 homerun and 20 steal guy, which would be great production to add to Morales, Morse, and Smoak. If this prediction comes true, the Mariners lineup could prove to be a deadly offense.

5. Felix Hernandez will set a career high in wins with 20
Felix has never hit this benchmark in his pro career with his highest being 19 in 2009, but besides that season he has never had more than 14. He has had unbelievable success so far in Seattle in all statistical categories except wins, which generally means his team has not been good enough and he has not received enough run support. I think this is the year that could really change because of the additions of Morales and Morse, along with the improvement of guys like Smoak and the health of Gutierrez. If Felix can get some run support, there is no doubt in my mind he could hit the magic number 20 and potentially win his second Cy Young award.

Felix Hernandez will be pitching with comfort this season after signing a massive contract extension in the offseason.
butattheendoftheday.com

6. The Mariners will win get 90 wins and contend for a wild card spot
I told you they would be bold. I do think this could actually happen. If the back end of the rotation guys can pitch well and the bullpen lead by Wilhelmsen can stay strong, this team finally has the hitting to make some noise in the American League. The division they are in is obviously a tough one, but I think this team has a lot of potential and could make some noise. Last year it took 93 wins to get one of the two wild card spots, but the year before it would have only taken 91 to be the second wild card team. If everything goes right for this team, I really think that this is a possibility.

Instant Reaction: Percy Harvin Traded to the Seahawks

by Jackson Safon

Percy Harvin. There are so many words to describe him. Fast. Electric. Explosive. And so many others. But I do not think his added value to the Seahawks can be understated. The all-purpose receiver was traded today from the Minnesota Vikings to the Seattle Seahawks for a first and seventh round pick this year and a mid-round pick next year (expected to be a third-round choice). While this seems like a lot to give up, I think the Seahawks won the trade without question. Harvin is unbelievably and undeniably talented. I personally think that if he didn't get hurt last year, he would have won the MVP instead of Adrian Peterson. If you look at his numbers through the nine games he played, you will realize what I mean. He had 62 receptions, 677 yards, and three touchdowns receiving, plus one more touchdown returning kicks and one more touchdown rushing the ball. If you pro-rate these stats over an entire season, Harvin would have had 110 catches, 1,203 yards, and seven total touchdowns. Plus, he was on pace for over 2,400 all-purpose yards, which would have lead the league by a mile. Since 2009, Percy Harvin has accounted for 29 total touchdowns: 20 of which came on pass receptions, five of which came on kick returns, and four from rushes. The man is simply unstoppable when you get the ball in his hands. Now it is clear that Harvin’s talent is incredible, but talented players don’t always fit with every team. This will not be the case in his new marriage with Seattle.

Percy Harvin gives Russell Wilson a huge play-maker at the wide receiver position.
AP Photo/Tom Hauck

Seahawk’s offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell coached Harvin in the same position in Minnesota, which were Harvin’s first two years in the league. The knowledge of each other and their styles will be incredibly helpful in getting Harvin integrated into the offense. Even though Russell Wilson and the Seahawk’s passing attack got more and more vertical as the season progressed, a large component of the passing game is short-medium yardage and in the middle of the field. These are the kinds of plays where Percy Harvin does most of his damage, because of his ability to make plays when he has the ball in his hands after the catch. Using him in bubble screens and the short to medium passing game will be where he excels the most, but he has the speed to be a down-field threat as well. For those of you who don’t know, these talks did not just spring up out of the blue, as Harvin was being shopped off and on by the Vikings. These talks were first brought up regarding the Seahawks at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The ‘Hawks were always thought to be a possible trade partner because of their desire for an explosive receiver, but talks never became serious because of the Vikings management being adamant that they had, “no intention to trade Percy Harvin,” even though the speedy wide receiver had requested a trade.

Although the trade itself is virtually complete, Harvin will have to sign an extension with the Seahawks for the deal to become complete. It still remains to be seen how much he will get, but expect the number to be very large, and they could cost a lot against the salary cap. Because of the large contract, expect to see some roster cuts. A couple guys that I don’t necessarily see as expendable, but could be casualties of this deal are Leon Washington and Sidney Rice. Washington is a specialist who frankly is unnecessary now that Harvin is here. Washington is a terrific returner, but he is still no match for Harvin, and Washington’s salary costs $2 million against the cap. Another guy who could be cut or traded is Sidney Rice, simply because he is another big money receiver who costs almost $7 million dollars against the cap just next year, which is about the same figure as Tom Brady. Although this is hard to see, it still has a possibility of happening. However, all of this depends on Harvin’s contract because it remains to be seen the numerical value of his salary, as well as how much it costs against the salary cap.

Even though they look like friends in this picture, Percy Harvin may have just caused Leon Washington to lose his job with the Seahawks.
AP Photo/Andy King

I already explained why Harvin fits with the team and used some of his statistics to show how good he really is, but there is still another element of this trade that needs to be addressed and that is how it will help the Seahawks overtake the 49ers. Adding another explosive piece to the offense puts more stress on opposing defenses and the 49ers only weakness on defense was cornerback, which means that this could be a huge place to exploit them. Additionally, word was the Niner’s were also in trade talks with the Vikings, which means that the Seahawks actually took Harvin from the 49ers. This is huge, because not only do the Seahawks add arguably the most explosive and versatile offensive weapon in the league, but they take him away from one of the Seahawks’ biggest rivals as well. Adding a weapon like this makes the Seahawk’s offense so hard to defend because of its great balance. Marshawn Lynch was second in the league in rushing last season and with Russell Wilson making great strides last year, one of the big goals of the offseason was to get him another weapon to improve the passing game. I guess the Seahawks can check that one off the list.

One final question about this trade is whether Harvin is truly worth the headache because he has had some off the field issues as well as some injury problems throughout his career. Let me be very clear on this issue. I don’t think it is an issue at all. One particular incident people will point to is Harvin blowing up at his head coach Leslie Frazier in the second half of a game against the Seahawks, of all teams. Some diva receivers would have been complaining about lack of touches or pass attempts in their direction. This case was quite the contrary. Harvin was complaining about a lack of touches for his teammate Adrian Peterson. This not only shows that Harvin is a team player, but that he is one of the smarter players in the NFL and knows what needs to be done to win. The second issue people will point to is his injury problems. This is true; Harvin has had his fair share of injuries throughout his career. Not only has Harvin battled migraines since his college days at Florida, he has also had his fair share of leg injuries. He is coming off surgery on an ankle he injured in the game against the Seahawks. He has also had a minor surgery on his right knee and has had Achilles tendinitis in his right leg as well. These have all been in the past and he has clearly been able to recover well from them. Up until his injury last season, he was performing at an incredibly high level. Furthermore, Harvin has established himself as one of the toughest players in the entire league and has proven he can play through pain and still perform at a high level. Harvin has reportedly moved past his migraine issue and with plenty of time to recover from ankle surgery, I do not worry about him missing any time or losing any explosiveness.

Hopefully Seahawk's fans will never have to see Percy Harvin like this.
Chicagotribune.com

Harvin’s versatility, speed, and flat out skill make him one of the best options in the NFL as an all-purpose player and combining him with the weapons already in Seattle makes him all the more valuable. In Minnesota, he and Adrian Peterson made up one of the best one-two combos in the entire NFL, and that was with Christian Ponder as their quarterback. Now, combine Harvin with Marshawn Lynch and one of the rising stars in the NFL at quarterback in Russell Wilson, and you have a virtually unstoppable three-headed monster. Wilson’s accuracy makes him the perfect type of quarterback to combine with Percy Harvin because getting the ball on time to a play-maker like Harvin is so key to success. Because he makes so many of his plays and gains so many of his yards after the catch, delivering the football in stride is one of the most important things to do for a weapon like Percy Harvin.

Finally, when determining a player’s value to a team, it is important to see what kinds of players the team has at that position already. For example, adding a star tight end to the Patriots, quarterback to the Broncos, or running back to the Vikings would be essentially useless because of the players they have at those positions already. So when deciding what kind of impact Percy Harvin will have on the Seahawks receiving core, it is important to compare him to the players already there. Sidney Rice led the team in catches last year with 50, which are 12 less than the number Harvin had in only nine games last season. Rice also lead the team with 748 receiving yards, which is only 71 yards more than Harvin had in eight more games. Just thinking of the possibilities with Harvin makes me start to tear up out of joy.

Percy Harvin is one of the best play-makers in the entire league and is personally one of my favorite players to watch. He is close to unstoppable when he touches the ball and he should get a lot of chances this upcoming season. Adding him to the Seahawks team gives them a dimension they have not had in years and I think it has a good chance to put them ahead of the 49ers this season. Simply put, this offense is going to be fun to watch this season.

Mariners Lose, but Optimism Still Remains

by Jackson Safon

Blowing a 6-3 lead by allowing three runs in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth poses questions about the Mariners’ bullpen. No runs after the sixth inning say we don’t have quite enough offense at the end of games. This sound eerily similar to the last year for the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners went on to lose yesterday's game 7-6 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Yet, I am as optimistic about this team as I have been in years past. My first three sentences of this piece are about the only negative things of the entire spring so far for the Mariners. This Mariners team has moved to 10-2 so far in cactus league play and has hit multiple home runs in ten straight games. I wouldn't be surprised if they had that many games with multiple home runs over all of last season. The M’s have showed unbelievable promise so far, with everyone getting into the home run act. So far the team has had 26 home runs, in the 12 games, and has six players with multiple bombs. Gutierrez and Peguero are tied for the team lead with three homers each. This hot streak they are on right now has lead fans to be very hopeful about the upcoming season, as the Mariners look to improve from their MLB worst on-base-percentage and slugging-percentage last season.

Most people are excited about the new additions of Kendrys Morales and Michael Morse (who each had one homerun in Wednesday’s loss), and I am excited for them as well, however; the player I am most excited for this season is Franklin Gutierrez. He is one of, if not the best defensive center fielders in the American League. So far in spring training he has led the Mariners with three home runs and seven RBI. He had to miss most of last season with a groin injury and batted only .260 in the games he did play. He seems to have figured something out early in the spring, and I for one am hoping he can keep it going in to the regular season. If Gutierrez can stay healthy, I don’t see why he can’t be one of the top outfielders in the American League.

There hasn't been quite as much spring training optimism about the pitching staff, but with a team that was fourth in the American League in ERA last season, I don’t see any real reason why they should regress from that. A good mix of veterans and young guys on both sides of the ball should create good locker room camaraderie and I expect a much improved team from last year. On the monthly brew a few weeks ago, I predicted an 81-81 season, but with all of the success so far in spring training I might have to adjust that number a little bit.

Now obviously spring training success doesn't really mean anything, and this team could fall right back into the same patterns we have been used to seeing. However, I sense something different about this team. More fight, and definitely more pop in the lineup. Only time will tell where this team will really go, but after this great start, I for one am very optimistic.
